Replace the CMOS battery

If the previous method showed that your computer can’t remember the date and time between reboots, it can only mean one thing: you’re actually dealing with a faulty complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) battery.

Every motherboard has a CMOS battery. Its main task is to back up important information about your computer (user BIOS settings, system-wide time and date, critical error logs.).

But like any battery, this thing fails at some point. If you have a problem on an older model motherboard, the best way to solve the problem is to simply replace the new CMOS battery with a new equivalent one.

These things are very common because they are used for a wide variety of electronic devices. So you’ll be able to find one at any electrical store – you might even have one in your house.

If you have a new CMOS battery in your hand, here’s what you need to do to replace it with a faulty battery:

  • First, turn off your computer completely and make sure it’s disconnected from the power source.
  • Wear a static wrist strap if you have one. These are the items that you ground to the computer case and make sure that you don’t damage any components with static electricity.
  • Take the cover off the computer, look at the motherboard and look for the CMOS battery. They shouldn’t be that hard to spot.
  • If you see it, use your fingernail or a non-conductive screwdriver to pull the faulty battery out of the socket.
  • Install a new CMOS battery and close the side cover before powering up and rebooting the computer again.
  • After installing the new CMOS battery, wait until startup is complete, then follow method 1 again to set the time and date to the correct values. Then restart to see if your computer can now remember the changes.
  • After making sure everything is working, open Internet Explorer (or Edge) and see if the “Problem with this website’s security certificate” error still appears when you try to access certain web pages.

Install the certificate

  • Right-click the Internet Explorer icon and select Run as administrator.
  • Visit a website and select the “Go to this website (not recommended)” option.
  • In the address bar, click “Certificate Error” and select “View Certificates”.
  • Select “Install Certificate…”.
  • Select “Next.”
  • Select the “Place all certificates in the next repository” option.
  • Select “Browse…”.
  • Select “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” and click “OK”.
  • Select Yes when prompted with a security alert.
  • Select “OK” in the “Import successful” message.
  • Select OK in the Certificate field.

The name does not match.

If you receive the message “The security certificate submitted by this website was issued to a different website address” with your version of the security certificate error, it may mean that the certificate does not match the name. You may not want to experiment with this setting because it must be enabled to avoid security problems. However, if you insist, follow these steps:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Select the options wheel, then “Explorer Properties.”
  • Select the “Advanced” tab.
  • Scroll down to the Security section and uncheck the box to warn against certificate address incompatibility.
  • Select OK.
  • Restart your computer.
