Disabling Windows antivirus/firewall

According to some affected users, this problem can also occur because the antivirus program is interfering with the data exchange between your game installation and the game server. In most cases, this is a false positive.

If this scenario applies and you are using a third-party package, you should disable the real-time protection before running the game to make sure that you no longer get a disable with error code 10053.

For most third-party AV/firewall packages installed at the system level, you can disable real-time protection by right-clicking the icon in the system tray and looking for the option to disable real-time protection.

However, if this scenario does not apply because you are using the standard security package (Windows Defender / Windows Firewall), you must disable real-time protection in the Windows Security menu before you start the game. Do the following:

  1. Press the Windows + R key to open the “Run” dialog box. Then type “windows defender” in the Run field and press Enter to open the Windows Security menu.
  2. While in the Windows Security menu, click on “Virus and Threat Protection” and then click on the “Manage Settings” hyperlink (just below “Virus and Threat Protection Settings”).
  3. When you get to the next window, uncheck the real-time protection button and save your changes.
  4. Now go back to the first Windows Security window and click on Firewall and Network Protection.
  5. In the next window, click on the currently active network and uncheck the Windows Defender firewall.
  6. After disabling both components, restart your computer, then run MapleStory 2 and see if the problem is resolved.

If the problem persists, proceed to the next solution below.

Exclude maplestory2.exe from your firewall

If you do not want to disable the real-time protection of your antivirus program, you can also whitelist the executable game file in your firewall/antivirus settings.

If you’re using a third-party firewall, look online for specific steps to whitelist the executable. If you are still using the Windows firewall, follow the instructions below so that it does not interfere with data exchange between the game and the game server.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box. Once you’re in the text box, type “control firewall.CPL” and press Enter to open Windows Firewall problems.
  2. Once you’re in the Windows Defender settings menu, click on the application or feature in the left-hand menu to allow them to pass through the Windows Defender firewall.
  3. Once you are in the Allowed Applications menu, click Change Settings, then click Yes for the User Account Control option.
  4. When the list is fully editable, click on Allow other applications in the menu below, then click on Browser and navigate to the location where you installed MapleStory 2.
  5. Then add the maplestory2.exe file to the Allow List.
  6. After adding the executable to the list of allowed items, find the entry in the list of allowed applications and features and check the Private and Public boxes.
  7. Restart the computer, run the game after the next load and see if the problem is solved now.

Clearing the DNS cache

According to many users, this type of error in MapleStory 2 is often due to a mismatch in the DNS (Domain Name System). If your network device is assigned the wrong range, this can affect the communication between your local MapleStory 2 installation and the game server.

If this problem persists, you may be able to resolve it by using the extended command line to clear the current DNS cache. Several affected users who encountered the same problem confirmed that they were able to get rid of it by clearing the current DNS cache.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the “Run” dialog box. Then type “cmd” in the text box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the extended command prompt.
  2. If you see User Account Control (UAC), click Yes to grant administrator privileges.
  3. At the extended prompt, type the following command and press Enter to clear the DNS cache:
    IP config / flush dns
  4. Note: Flushing the DNS cache will remove most of the information stored in the DNS cache. This will force your router to assign new DNS information.
  5. When the process is complete and you receive a success message, you can safely close the prompt.
  6. After that, open MapleStory 2 again and repeat the action that caused the error code.
