When you connect your computer, smartphone, or other device to your local network (*), all devices are assigned a unique IP address. The main purpose of this address is to provide the network and its components with an important addressing technique. It is often used to distinguish each device on the same network and to communicate between them. It can also be called internal IP (Internet Protocol).

For example, if you connect a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and a smartphone to the same wireless network, each device will have its own IP address, which is unique.

However, sometimes things don’t go as planned, due to failures or misconfiguration. Therefore, IP address conflicts occur when Windows detects an IP address conflict when using a Windows computer.

What causes the “Windows has detected an IP address conflict” message?

Each device that connects to the network is assigned a unique number – an IP address – that allows it to be recognized and communicated with. In theory, no two devices can have the same IP address. But in practice, interference is always possible. It may happen that two or more devices have the same IP address due to a faulty router, PC settings, or even problems with the Internet service provider.

In this case, the Windows operating system tries to tell you that multiple devices have the same IP address, which can lead to communication problems. This is a critical error because it prevents the device from connecting and communicating with the network and needs to be fixed immediately.

How to repair the “Windows detected IP address conflict” error?



Restart the router

1. Locate the power switch on your router and turn it off. This will disconnect you from the Internet and temporarily disconnect your network.
2. Wait a few minutes. Generally, 5 minutes is more than enough time to properly shut down the router and the network.
3. Turn the router back on again.
4. When the router is back on, try to see if the error persists.

Remove a static IP

1. While holding down the Windows key on your keyboard, press R. The Run utility will appear.
2. Type ncpa.CPL and click OK. The Network Connections window opens.
3. Right-click on the adapter you are using and select Properties.
4. Double-click Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
5. On the General tab, select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
6. Click OK in both windows and restart your computer.

Turn off the network adapter and turn it on again

1. While holding down the Windows key on your keyboard, press R. The Run utility will appear.
2. Enter ncpa.CPL and click OK. The Network Connections window opens.
3. Right-click on the adapter you are using and select Disable.
4. Once the adapter is disconnected and unplugged, right-click on the same adapter and select Enable.
5. Reboot the computer and check to see if the IP address conflict persists.

Disabling IPV6

1. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R. The Run utility will appear.
2. Type ncpa.CPL and click OK. The Network Connections window opens.
3. Right-click on the adapter you are using and select Properties.
4. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) so that the box is blank. This will disable the use of IPv6 on your computer.
5. Reboot your computer and check if the problem is resolved.
